My Review

“Shiloh” is the story of a boy trying to save a beagle who continually runs away from his abusive owner. The young man is stymied in his efforts by his father’s insistence that the dog be returned to its rightful owner. Dale Rosenbloom (in his only feature film directorial job) put together a thoughtful, complex, and mature story dealing with relevant moral issues such as responsibility and ownership. He wrote the excellent screenplay adapted from the 1991 children’s novel of the same name penned by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor.

The cast turned in excellent performances including Blake Heron as Marty, Michael Moriarity and Ann Dowd as his parents, Scott Wilson as the heavy of the piece, Rod Steiger as veterinarian Dr. Wallace, Bonnie Bartlett as Mrs. Wallace, and the adorable beagle Frannie in the title role as Shiloh. The watchable heart-warming doggie picture “Shiloh” was an independent film from Utopia Pictures, Zeta Entertainment, Good Dog Productions, and Legacy Releasing.

Two sequels were released including “Shiloh 2: Shiloh Season” (1999) and “Saving Shiloh” (2006), directed by Sandy Tung and written by Rosenbloom. An interesting footnote to this article is that director-screenwriter Dale Rosenbloom is the son of Carroll Rosenbloom and Georgia Rosenbloom Frontiere, owners of the Los Angeles Rams football team. He produced and wrote numerous motion pictures and television programs, but “Shiloh” was his only directorial effort for the big screen.
