My Review

Johnny Depp stars as the famous director of off-beat 1950’s and 1960’s motion pictures in “Ed Wood.” Director Tim Burton (“Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” 1985) superbly orchestrated this black-and-white film into a wonderful salute to Wood, which was not a success in 1994 but is a cult favorite these days. The excellent screenplay was written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski and based on the 1992 biography “Nightmare of Ecstasy: The Life and Art of Edward G. Wood Jr.” by Rudolph Grey.

The cast includes Johnny Depp as Ed Wood, Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi, Sarah Jessica Parker and Patricia Arquette as Ed’s girlfriends, Jeffrey Jones as Criswell, G. D. Spradlin as a Baptist minister & producer, Vincent D’Onofrio as Orson Welles, Lisa Marie as Vampira, and Bill Murray, Ned Bellamy, Max Casella, Mike Starr, Korla Pandit, Rance Howard (father of Ron Howard), and Juliet Landau (daughter of Martin Landau and Barbara Bain) in a variety of supporting roles.

The very watchable “Ed Wood” was a flop at the box office for producer Tim Burton, Touchstone Pictures, Di Novi Pictures, Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, and The Walt Disney Company. This cult classic won two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor (Landau) and Best Makeup. A part of the plot in the later segment of the film was his production of his favorite project “Plan 9 from Outer Space,” released in 1957.
