My Review

“Wuthering Heights” is the latest version of the 1847 novel by Emily Bronte about a love affair gone awry in Victorian England between Heathcliff and Catherine. Director-screenwriter Emerald Fennell (“Saltburn” 2023) concentrates on the carnal side of the story with doses of bloodiness and gore thrown in whenever she finds the opportunity. This is a distraction from the dark tale, which is actually a bit of a rebellion again the strict mores of Queen Victoria’s 19th century England. As the film progresses in its 136 minute running time, it actually becomes more watchable and the intense drama draws the viewer further into the story.

The cast is headed by Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff Linton. These two Australian actors have the accent and mannerisms of Jolly Old England down pat. Co-stars include Hong Chau, Martin Clunes, Paul Rhys, Shazad Latif, Alison Oliver, Ewan Mitchell, Vicky Pepperdine, and Charlotte Mellington and Owen Cooper as young Cathy and young Heathcliff, respectively. “Wuthering Heights” is quite a watchable heavy melodrama from producer Margot Robbie, Lucky Chap Entertainment, MRC, and Warner Bros. Pictures. Principal photography took place in the Yorkshire Dales region of the United Kingdom.
