“12 Monkeys” is a science fiction film telling the story of a man sent back in time from 2035 to 1996 to locate the origin of a man-made virus which wiped out most of the human race. He soon discovers he is in a time loop. The “drama” proceeds from there, horribly directed by Terry Gilliam (“The Fisher King” 1991) from an atrocious script by David Peoples and Janet Peoples. The plot and storyline are highly disorganized and the dialogue is simple juvenile.
The cast includes Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt, Christopher Plummer, Frank Gorshin, David Morse, Christopher Meloni, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Jon Seda, and Simon Jones as a zoologist. The unwatchable “12 Monkeys” was nonetheless a hit at the box office for Atlas Entertainment, Classico Entertainment, and Universal Pictures. It was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor (Pitt) and Best Costume Design.
