“Mickey 17” is a science fiction black comedy film set in the year 2054 about a disposable employee selected to colonize an ice planet. Due to the dangerous nature of the work, he continually dies and his clone takes over where the previous Mickey left off. Problems arise when Mickey 17 does not die and has conflicts with Mickey 18. The biggest problem is that director-screenwriter Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite” 2019) prolongs the confusing storyline so much that the sarcastic comedy gets lost in the shuffle. This film is a gigantic bore from start to finish.
The long-suffering cast members include Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes and Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette as Ken and Ylfa Barnes, the egomaniac/dictatorial politician and his wife, who seem to resemble Bill and Hillary Clinton. Co-stars include Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Patsy Ferran, Stephen Park, and Haydn Gwynne as a congresswoman. The unwatchable silliness “Mickey 17” lost money at the box office for producer Bong Joon Ho, Plan B Entertainment, Offscreen Production Co., Kate Street Picture Co., and Warner Bros. Pictures.
