My Review

“The Women” is a drama film about the lives and friendships of a group of Manhattan women and the scores of women who work for them. Director George Cukor (“Little Women” 1933) put together an entertaining film in which not a single male character is seen or heard. He did maintain high quality with good production values, acceptable performances, and a lucid screenplay by Anita Loos and Jane Murfin.

The stars of the show include Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine, Marjorie Main, Lucille Watson, Hedda Hopper, Butterfly McQueen, Esther Dale, Virginia Grey, Ruth Hussey, and Cora Witherspoon. The original chick flick “The Women” was the ninth highest grossing picture of 1939 for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. They remade the film in 1956 as a musical comedy called “The Opposite Sex” starring June Allyson, Joan Collins, and Ann Miller.
