“King Arthur” is a off-beat interpretation of the legendary ancient British figure. This one has him employed as a cavalry officer in the Roman Army defending Hadrian’s Wall against the rebellious Scottish natives. Director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day” 2001) fumbled the ball here with a film featuring amateurish writing, lame character development, and ho-hum action sequences. The screenplay by David Franzoni is clearly rubbish.
The cast includes Clive Owen as Arthur, Keira Knightly as Guinevere, Ioan Gruffudd as Lancelot, Stephen Dillane as Merlin, Joel Edgerton, Madds Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, Ray Winstone, Ray Stevenson, Stellan Skarsgard, Ivano Marescotti, Lorenzo DeAngelis, Clive Russel, Stephania Orsola Garello, and Graham McTavish as a Roman officer. The unwatchable “King Arthur” was a disappointment at the box office for producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Touchstone Pictures, and Buena Vista Pictures Distribution.
