My Review

“Savage Guns” is a western drama where a drifter stays with a couple on their ranch to recover from exhaustion while wandering in the Mexican state of Sonora. When he recovers, he sides with them in their struggle against a violent Mexican gang. Director Michael Carreras created an exciting low-budget horse opera which is considered to be the first Spaghetti Western, with traits like antihero characters, settings in very dry desert conditions, graphic violence (for its time), and often limited dialogue. The script was written by Edmund Morris and story by Peter R. Newman.

The cast includes Richard Basehart as the gunslinger/drifter, Don Taylor and Paquita Rico as the couple who take him in, Jose Nieto and Fernando Rey as landowners, Alex Nicol as the head of the gang, and Maria Granada as Rico’s sister. The watchable “Savage Guns” was popular at European and American box office for Capricorn Productions (England), Tecisa and CEA Studios (Spain), and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was filmed in Almeria, Andalusia, Spain, location of numerous future Spaghetti Western projects.
