My Review

“My Reputation” is a romantic drama movie about a widow whose romance with an army officer stirs up gossip among the town’s busybodies, which in turn causes trouble with her friends, domineering mother, and two young sons. Director Curtis Bernhardt (“Million Dollar Baby” 1941) assembled a thoughtful and engrossing picture with good production values, sterling performances, and excellent writing. The screenplay by Catherine Turney was adapted from “Instruct My Sorrows,” a 1942 novel by Clare Jaynes.

The stars include Barbara Stanwyck in the lead role of widow Jessica Drummond. She sensitively portrayed a woman in a situation many, if not most, people have been in at one time or another. Co-stars include George Brent as Major Landis, Warner Anderson as the family attorney, Lucile Watson as her mother, Esther Dale as the maid, Scotty Beckett and Bobby Cooper as her sons, John Ridgely and Eve Arden as her friends, and Jerome Cowan as a would-be beau. The watchable “My Reputation” was a success in theatrical release for executive producer Jack Warner and Warner Bros. Pictures.
