Cate Blanchett plays an outlaw who is hired by a powerful man to find his daughter in the science fiction action film “Borderlands.” Director Eli Roth (“Death Wish” 2018) created a scifi film with loads of action and good special effects, but is poorly written with amateurish dialogue. He co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Crombie, adapted from the videogame of the same name from Gearbox Software.
The talented cast is wasted on this nonsense, which includes Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Gina Gershon, Edgar Ramirez, Ariana Greenblatt, Haley Bennett, and Bobby Lee. The nearly unwatchable (except for the action scenes) “Borderlands” was a huge flop at the box office for Arad Productions, Picturestart, Gearbox Studios, 2K, and Lionsgate Films.
It did not even make enough cash to begin to cover the huge budget and advertising expenses. The film did earn six Golden Raspberry Award nominations: Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actress (Blanchett), Worst Supporting Actor (Hart and Black), and Worst Screen Combo (Any two obnoxious characters, but especially Black).
