George Clooney plays a successful divorce lawyer who specializes in getting cheating husbands off the hook from expensive settlements, but when Catherine Zeta-Jones is denied any divorce compensation in one of his cases, she goes all-out for revenge in “Intolerable Cruelty.” Director Joel Coen (“Fargo” 1996) attempted to put together a sophisticated romantic comedy reminiscent of Old Hollywood’s screwball comedies. However, the quality of the screenplay is sub-par and cannot carry such old film’s refinement for the entire 100 minute running time. And Clooney and Zeta-Jones are not Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn.
The uneven screenplay was written by Joel Coen, Ethan Coen, Robert Ramsey, and Matthew Stone. Co-stars include Geoffrey Rush, Cedric the Entertainer, Edward Hermann, Billy Bob Thornton, Richard Jenkins, Julia Duffy, and Paul Adelstein. The so-so “Intolerable Cruelty” was modestly successful at the box office for producers Ethan Coen and Brian Grazer, Imagine Entertainment, Mike Zoss Productions, and Universal Pictures. Most of the movie was shot in Beverly Hills with some scenes filmed in Las Vegas.
