Walt Disney Pictures continues their practice of recent years of remaking classic films, this time reimagining “The Little Mermaid” into a live action version of the 1989 animated feature. Director Rob Marshall (“Mary Poppins Returns” 2018) and screenwriter David Magee have retained much of the charm of the story and the music of the original, penned by Alan Menken. All were adapted from the 1837 fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Anderson of Denmark.
The cast includes Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Awkwafina, Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Art Malik, Jacob Tremblay. The watchable “The Little Mermaid” was a modest hit for Walt Disney Pictures, Marc Platt Productions, DeLuca Marshall Productions, Walt Disney Studios, and The Walt Disney Company. The income from the box office receipts barely covered the original budget and the huge advertising expense, leaving only a small profit for Disney. It was filmed in Sardinia, Italy, and at Pinewood Studios in London, UK.
