After the Thin Man (1936)

My Review

Nick and Nora Charles return home from vacation only to find that Nora’s cousin’s husband is missing in “After the Thin Man.” When it turns into a possible murder case, the Charles’ swing into action. Director W. S. Van Dyke (“Tarzan the Ape Man” 1932) put together an excellent second film in the “Thin Man” series, with a lucid and witty screenplay by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett.

The cast includes William Powell, Myrna Loy, James Stewart, Elissa Landi, Joseph Calleia, Jesse Ralph, Alan Marshal, Sam Levene, Penny Singleton, Paul Fix, Esther Howard, and Skippy as Asta the dog. The watchable “After the Thin Man” was a big hit at the Depression Era box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the fourth highest grossing film of 1936. It was filmed at MGM Studios in Culver City and some shooting in San Francisco.
