Battleship (2012)

My Review

“Battleship” is a science fiction action film about a U. S. Navy fleet battling extraterrestrial invaders in the Pacific Ocean. The ships are trapped inside an alien forcefield, with the drama proceeding from there. Director Peter Berg (“Friday Night Lights” 2004) made a movie based on the Hasbro board game with disastrous results. The film has a shopworn storyline we have seen before with goofy dialogue and bad acting. The screenplay by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber is just terrible.

The cast includes Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Rhianna, Liam Neeson, Brooklyn Decker, Jesse Piemons, Tadanobu Asano, and Peter MacNicol as the U. S. Secretary of Defense. The unwatchable “Battleship” was a box office bomb for Hasbro Studios, Bluegrass Films, Film 44, and Universal Pictures. One positive aspect of the film is the special effects, including some elements of the board game like the grid pattern using the hit or miss method in sinking your opponent’s ship.

“Battleship” was nominated for seven Golden Raspberry Awards, winning one for Worst Supporting Actress (Rhianna). Non-winners include Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Supporting Actor (Neeson), Worst Supporting Actress (Decker), Worst Screenplay, and Worst Screen Ensemble. It was primarily filmed on location in Oahu, Hawaii.
