My Review

“The Three Musketeers” is the story of Charles D’Artagnan, a rural Frenchman who travels to Paris for fun and adventure. He finds enormous amounts of both in this classic version of the 1844 novel of the same name by Alexander Dumas. Director George Sidney (“Anchors Away” 1945) skillfully put together this rendition as sort of a western-comedy, from an excellent screenplay by Robert Ardrey. It was nominated for one Academy Award for Best Cinematography (Technicolor) for Robert Planck.

The top-rate cast from the MGM stable of performers includes Gene Kelly as D’Artagnan, Lana Turner as the Countess, Angela Lansbury as Queen Anne, Frank Morgan as King Louis, Vincent Price, June Allison, Van Heflin, Keenan Wynn, Gig Young, Reginald Owen, Marie Windsor, Robert Coote, and John Sutton. The watchable “The Three Musketeers” was the sixth highest grossing movie of 1948 for producer Pandro S. Berman and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was filmed primarily at the MGM Studios in Culver City, and in Pasadena, Canoga Park, Simi Valley, and Monterey, California.
