My Review

“Virginia City” is a Civil War western telling the story of a Union officer who escapes from a Confederate prison, and races westward to Nevada to stop his Rebel captors from seizing $5 million in gold to fund the collapsing Confederacy. Director Michael Curtiz (“Casablanca” 1942) and screenwriter Robert Buckner put together an engrossing and satisfying western with a great cast and good production values.

The cast includes Errol Flynn, Miriam Hopkins, Randolph Scott, Humphrey Bogart, Alan Hale, Frank McHugh, Douglass Dumbrille, Moroni Olsen, Dickie Jones, Ward Bond, William Hopper, and Victor Kilian as Abraham Lincoln. The watchable “Virginia City” was a hit at the box office for Warner Bros. Pictures. It was filmed in Flagstaff, Arizona, with cinematographer Sol Polito capturing the beautiful scenery on black-and-white film.
