The Chase (1966)

My Review

“The Chase” is a drama film about a small town sheriff attempting to protect a recent prison escapee from a revenge-thirsty town folk. Director Arthur Penn (“The Miracle Worker” 1962) attempted to put together an action-adventure picture, but was hindered by the stiffly written screenplay by Lillian Hellman. The stellar cast did not seem to know where to go with the lack of focus from the director.

The stars include Marlon Brando as the sheriff, Robert Redford as the jail breaker, Jane Fonda as his wife, E. G. Marshall, Angie Dickinson, Janice Rule, Miriam Hopkins, Martha Hyer, Robert Duvall, Richard Bradford, Henry Hull, Diana Hyland, James Fox, Jocelyn Brando, Clifton James, Joel Fluellen, Bruce Cabot, and Lori Martin as Cutie. The boring and unwatchable “The Chase” was a box office bomb for producer Sam Spiegel, Horizon Pictures, and Columbia Pictures. It was filmed in Technicolor in various locations throughout California.
