My Review

“The Jesus Music” is a documentary film chronicling the development of Contemporary Christian Music from directors Andrew Erwin and Jon Erwin (“I Can Only Imagine” 2018). This comprehensive look at the genre follows its roots in the Jesus “hippie” music of the 1960’s and 1970’s, Christian pop-rock of the 1980’s, Christian metal music of the 1990’s, and the worship music popular in recent decades.

The Erwin’s include interviews with Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Cece Winans, Kirk Franklin, Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael Tait, Toby Mac, Lecrae, Russ Taft, and Greg Laurie, among many others. The watchable and fast moving “The Jesus Music” was a modest hit at the box office for Kingdom Story Company, K-Love Films, Southland Studios, and Lionsgate Films. It was filmed in Southern California and Nashville, Tennessee.
