Respect (2021)

My Review

Jennifer Hudson delivered a convincing performance as singer Aretha Franklin in “Respect.” She did well in the musical numbers as well as in the dramatic offering under the guidance of first-time director Liesl Tommy. The adequate screenplay was written by Tracey Scott Wilson, and was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia.

The supporting cast includes Forest Whitaker and Audra McDonald as Aretha’s parents, Marlon Wayans as her husband and manager, Marc Maron as producer Jerry Wexler, Tate Donovan as a talent scout, Mary J. Blige as Dinah Washington, Gilbert Glenn Brown as Martin Luther King Jr., Kelvin Hair as Sam Cooke, and Lodric D. Collins as Smokey Robinson. The watchable “Respect” was a box office bomb for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Bron Creative Studios, Glickmania, and United Artists Releasing.
