My Review

“Holiday” is a romantic screwball comedy where Cary Grant plays a self-made man from humble beginnings who gets engaged to a wealthy socialite played by Katherine Hepburn, only to clash with her family’s traditional and rigid rules. The wacky comedy proceeds from there. Director George Cukor (“David Copperfield” 1935) is an expert at this sort of glossy romcom, and “Holiday” one is no exception. The screenplay was written by Donald Ogden Stewart and Sidney Buchman.

The cast includes Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Lew Ayres, Edward Everett Horton, Doris Nolan, Binnie Barnes, Henry Kolker, Jean Dixon, and Henry Daniell. This was Dixon’s final film appearance, in a short movie career that began in 1929. The watchable “Holiday” was popular at the box office for Columbia Pictures. It was filmed at the Columbia/Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood, California, USA.

This black-and-white motion picture was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction. The four films with Grant and Hepburn include “Sylvia Scarlett” (1935), “Bringing Up Baby” (1938), “Holiday” (1938), and “The Philadelphia Story” (1940).
