A Tale of Two Cities (1935)

My Review

“A Tale of Two Cities” is an historical drama which follows two look-alikes, one a French aristocrat and an English attorney, who fall in love with the same woman, set in the backdrop of the French Revolution (1775-1795). Director Jack Conway (“Tarzan and His Mate” 1934) and screenwriters W. P, Lipscomb and S. N. Behrman fill the screen with a flurry of activity and lots of action to keep people occupied. It is based on the 1859 novel by Charles Dickins.

The cast includes Ronald Colman, Elizabeth Allan, Edna May Oliver, Reginald Owen, Basil Rathbone, H. B. Warner, and Henry B. Walthall. “A Tale of Two Cities” was popular at the box office for producer David O. Selznick and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was filmed at the iconic MGM Studios in Culver City. This is considered the definitive version of “A Tale of Two Cities,” which has had numerous film and television adaptations over the last one hundred years.
