The Old Corral (1936)

My Review

“The Old Corral” is a western movie starring Gene Autry as a small town sheriff in California who must save his new girl friend escape from Chicago gangsters, as she had previously witnessed a murder. Director Joseph Kane and screenwriters Sherman L. Lowe and Joseph F. Poland put together an entertaining Gene Autry vehicle with all of the bells and whistles and appropriate western music.

The cast includes Gene Autry, Smiley Burnett, Irene Manning, Lon Chaney Jr., and Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers. Rogers had a secondary role here, but would become a big star in 1938 in his own western musical “Under Western Stars.” This winsome B-movie western “The Old Corral” was popular in Depression Era picture shows for Republic Pictures, with a 54 minute running time.
