My Review

“Dunkirk” depicts the 1940 evacuation of over 300,000 Allied soldiers trapped on French beaches. Director-screenwriter Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight” trilogy of 2005, 2008, 2012) tells the story with minimal dialogue, visual storytelling, and Hans Zimmer’s drama-filled musical score. It depicts the rescue efforts from land, sea, and air perspectives.

The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning three – Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. Non-winners include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), Best Musical Score (Hans Zimmer), and Best Production Design. It was filmed primarily on the beaches of Dunkirk, France.

The cast includes Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, and Michael Caine. The very classy and watchable “Dunkirk” was a hit at the box office for producers Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan, Syncopy Inc., RatPac-Dune Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
