I, Tonya (2017)

My Review

Producer and star Margot Robbie, director Craig Gillespie (“Million Dollar Arm” 2014), and screenwriter Steven Rogers have put together an excellent film about Tonya Harding called “I, Tonya.” It takes a look at her life, skating career, and the controversy surrounding the feud with fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan.

Margot Robbie took on the title role in grand fashion, even doing some of the simpler skating stunts. Co-stars include Sebastian Stan as boyfriend Jeff, Allison Janney as her mum, Caitlan Carver as Kerrigan, Julianne Nicholson as her coach, Bobby Cannavale as a reporter, Paul Walter Hauser as the bodyguard, and Ricky Russert as the attacker on Nancy.

The melodrama “I, Tonya” was popular in theatrical release for AI Film, Lucky Chap Entertainment, Clubhouse Pictures, Neon Rated, and 30 West. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, winning two for Best Actress (Robbie) and Best Supporting Actress (Janney). The non-winner was Best Film Editing. It was filmed in Georgia.
