My Review

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” is the fifth in the series telling the tale of Jack Sparrow going on a search for the legendary Trident of Poseidon with a Royal Navy sailor and a beautiful astronomer. Directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg put together a stand-alone story not dependent on the previous four installments to follow the plot. The film does have good production values and acceptable, but not outstanding, performances. The tightly written screenplay was penned by Jeff Nathanson.

The cast includes Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, Javier Bardem as Captain Salazar, Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, Brendon Thwaites as sailor Henry Turner, Kaya Scodelario as astronomer Carina Smyth, Kevin McNally as Gibbs, Paul McCartney as Uncle Jack, Orlando Bloom as Turner, Keira Knightly as Swann, and Bill Nighy as Davy Jones. The watchable “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” was a big hit at the box office for producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, and The Walt Disney Company.

It was filmed in Queensland, Australia, and was nominated for three Golden Raspberry Awards – Worst Actor (Depp), Worst Supporting Actor (Bardem), and Worst Screen Combo (Depp and “his worn out drunk routine”). The previous films were released in 2003, 2006, 2007, and 2011. An untitled sixth film is currently in development.
