The Mummy (2017)

My Review

“The Mummy” is an action-adventure film where a soldier of fortune, an archeologist, and a monster hunter team up and go to Egypt and, in the course of their work, accidentally free an ancient evil Egyptian princess. The action, adventure, and terror proceeds from there, sloppily directed by Alex Kurtzman (“People Like Us” 2012) from an atrocious screenplay by David Keopp, Christopher McQuarrie, and Dylan Kussman.

The sleepwalking cast includes Tom Cruise as the soldier of fortune, Annabelle Wallis as the archeologist, Russell Crowe as monster hunter Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Sofia Boutella as The Mummy, Jake Johnson as a soldier, Courtney B. Vance as Col. Greenway, Marwan Kenzari as Jekyll’s chief of security, and Javier Botet as the ancient Egyptian god of death. “The Mummy” was a box office bomb for Dark Universe, Perfect World Pictures, and Universal Pictures.

This film was intended to inaugurate the “Dark Universe,” a shared movie universe based on Universal Pictures’ catalogue of monster films. However, the film’s poor reception at the box office and with critics led to its cancelation. “The Mummy” received eight Golden Raspberry Award nominations, including “The Razzie Nominee So Bad You Loved It.” The sole winner was Worst Actor (Tom Cruise).
