My Review

“Black Panther” tells the story of T’Challa returning to the hidden African nation of Wakanda to become king after the death of his father. He faces a major challenge from his estranged cousin Erik Killmonger, who plans to use Wakanda’s weapons to start a global revolution. Director Ryan Coogler (“Creed” 2015) put together a film with excellent action sequences, memorable performances, and an outstanding screenplay he co-wrote with Joe Robert Cole.

The cast includes Chadwick Boseman as T-Challa/Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Lupita Nuongo, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis, Martin Freeman, Leticia Wright, Winston Duke, Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Kaluuya, Stan Lee, and Trevor Noah. “Black Panther” is the 18th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the second highest grossing film of 2018 for producer Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, and The Walt Disney Company. The sequel is “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022).

It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning three – Best Original Score (Ludwig Goransson), Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design. Non-winners include Best Picture, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Original Song (“All the Stars,” Kendrick Lamar, Mark Spears, Anthony Tiffith, and SZA).
