A Star Is Born (2018)

My Review

“A Star Is Born” is a musical movie about an established country music star who falls in love with a young singer. All goes well until his alcoholism gets in the way, with the drama proceeding from there. First time director Bradley Cooper did an excellent job at the helm of this project, a remake of several Hollywood classics with the same name and the same theme.

The cast is headed by Bradley Cooper as the fading star and Lady Gaga as the new singing sensation. They breathed new life into classic roles, evoking comparisons to Fredric March & Janet Gaynor (1937), James Mason & Judy Garland (1954), and Kris Kristofferson and Barbara Streisand (1976). Co-stars include Sam Elliot, Dave Chappelle, Andrew Dice Clay, Rafi Gavron, Anthony Ramos, Ron Rifkin, and Alec Baldwin. “A Star Is Born” was a box office hit for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Live Nation Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures.

“A Star Is Born” was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning one for Best Original Song (“Shallow” Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt). Non-winners include Best Picture, Best Actor (Cooper), Best Actress (Gaga), Best Supporting Actor (Elliot), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography (Matthew Libatique), and Best Sound Mixing. It was filmed at locations around Southern California.
