Deadwood: The Movie (2019)

My Review

“Deadwood: The Movie” is a sequel to the HBO television series (2004-2006). With most of the original cast returning, the story features saloon owner Al Swearengen clashing with Sheriff Seth Bullock, who in turn has his own conflicts with George Hurst, now a U. S. Senator from California.

Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant, and Gerald McRaney retain their old charm as Searengen, Bullock, and Hearst, respectively. Co-stars include Molly Parker, Paula Malcomsen, Anna Gunn, Brad Dourif, Robin Weigart, William Sanderson, Kim Dickins, W. Earl Brown, John Hawkes, and Dayton Callie.

“Deadwood: The Movie” maintains the flavor of the original series, which spanned three seasons and 36 episodes, thanks to fantastic direction by Daniel Minahan and excellent writing by David Milch, the creator of “Deadwood.” This is a watchable western made-for-television movie that aired on HBO in May, 2019, from HBO Films, Red Board Productions, and The Mighty Mint. Primary filming took place on the Melody Ranch in the Newhall section of Santa Clarita, California.
