My Review

“1917” is a World War I film about two British corporals sent on an urgent mission across enemy lines to cancel a doomed offensive that walks some 1,600 UK soldiers into a German trap. Director Sam Mendes (“Skyfall” 2012) put together a movie with marvelous production values, good performances, and a top-rate script which immerses the audience into the wartime drama. Mendes co-wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairnes.

The cast is headed by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman as the two corporals. Co-stars include Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, and Dennis Mays as Sergeant Sanders. “1917” was a box office sensation around the world for DreamWorks Pictures, Amblin Partners, Reliance Entertainment, Neal Street Productions, and Universal Pictures. It was filmed in England, Scotland, and Wales.

“1917” was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning three – Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins), Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects. The non-winners include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score (Thomas Newman), Best Production Design, and Best Sound Mixing.
