My Review

Director Clint Eastwood (“Play Misty for Me” 1971) continues to put together high quality motion pictures from behind the camera with “Richard Jewell.” The film is based on the true story of a security guard falsely accused by the FBI of planting the bomb which exploded at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.

The movie pretty much sticks with the facts of the case. The outstanding screenplay was written by Billy Ray, based on the 2019 book “The Suspect: An Olympic Bombing, the FBI, the Media, and Richard Jewell, the Man Caught in the Middle” by Kent Alexander and Kevin Salwen.

The cast includes Paul Walter Hauser as Jewell, Sam Rockwell as his attorney, Jon Hamm as the FBI agent, Kathy Bates as Jewell’s mother, Olivia Wilde as a reporter, and Garon Grigsby as Bryant Gumbel. Bates received the movie’s only Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actress. The watchable and eye-opening “Richard Jewell” was a box office bomb for producers Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Clint Eastwood, Malpaso Productions, Apian Way Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures. It was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia.
