Midway (2019)

My Review

“Midway” is a war film chronicling the first six months of the Pacific Theater in World War II, beginning with the attack on Pearl Harbor (December, 1941) and culminating in the pivotal Battle of Midway (June, 1942), which shifted the momentum to the Allies. Director Roland Emmerich (“White House Down” 2013) used good production values, special effects, lucid storytelling with a balanced view of American and Japanese efforts, and a marvelous screenplay by Wes Tooke. It was based on the 1976 epic film “Midway.”

The cast includes Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Patrick Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Dennis Quaid, Mandy Moore, Nick Jonas, and Ed Skrein. “Midway” was a modest hit at the box office, barely making a profit against the huge cost of this big budget production and advertising and marketing expenses. Not good news for producer Roland Emmerich, Centropolis Entertainment, The Mark Gordon Company, Bona Film Group, Entertainment One, and Lionsgate Films. It was primarily filmed on location in Oahu, Hawaii, and on soundstages in Montreal, Canada.
