My Review

“Broadway Melody of 1940” is a musical drama about two struggling dance partners who face a rift when a case of mistaken identity lands the least talented of the pair in a big Broadway play. Director Norman Taurog (“Boys Town” 1938) does a fantastic job at the helm of this musical which features big stars and music by Cole Porter, such as “Begin the Beguine.”

The stars of the show include Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell, George Murphy, Frank Morgan, Lynne Carver, Florence Rice, Ian Hunter, Herman Bing, Ann Morriss, and Mel Blanc. “Broadway Melody of 1940” was the only pairing of Astaire and Powell on screen, and a big hit at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was filmed entirely at the MGM Studios in Culver City.
