My Review

Errol Flynn does his usual swashbuckling routine in the action-adventure drama “The Sea Hawk.” It has lavish production values from director Michael Curtiz (“The Adventures of Robin Hood” 1938) and a great screenplay by Howard Koch and Seton I. Miller. Flynn plays a captain of Her Majesty’s ship Albatross, who aids England’s defense against Spain.

The cast includes Errol Flynn, Brenda Marshall, Claude Rains, Donald Crisp, Alan Hale, Gilbert Roland, Henry Daniell, Jack La Rue, Una O’Connor, Edgar Buchanan, Montagu Love as King Philip II of Spain, and Flora Robson as Queen Elizabeth I of England. “The Sea Hawk” was a huge box office sensation for producer Hal B. Wallis and Warner Bros. Pictures. It received four Oscar nods – art direction, sound recording, special effects, and original score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.
