Sullivan’s Travels (1941)

My Review

Joel McCrea plays a movie director who becomes dissatisfied with putting together his popular comedies and longs to direct a “socially relevant” drama in “Sullivan’s Travels.” He goes undercover as a hobo to experience hardship, only to discover the ways comedy helps people socially. Director-screenwriter Preston Sturges (“The Palm Beach Story” 1942) takes full advantage of McCrea’s persona and superior performing abilities in creating this movie. McCrea appears in most scenes.

The leading lady part is well handled by Veronica Lake, whose sultry persona took movie audiences by storm. Co-stars include William Demarest, Robert Warwick, Porter Hall, Margaret Hayes, Eric Blore, and Robert Greig as the butler. Get ready for a fun road trip with Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake in “Sullivan’s Travels” from Paramount Pictures. It was filmed at the Paramount Ranch in Agoura, California.
