Dumbo (1941)

My Review

“Dumbo” is Walt Disney’s enduring story of a circus elephant whose large ears draw unwanted attention and gives him a chance to learn to fly. Director Ben Sharpsteen (“Pinocchio” 1940) expertly assembled this classic movie which is the 4th Animated Feature Film of the Walt Disney collection. It has wonderful life lessons for children and is widely viewed in the current 21st Century.

The voice cast includes Edward Brophy, Verna Felton, Sterling Holloway, Cliff Edwards, Herman Bing, and Billy Bletcher. The character of Dumbo is voiceless. “Dumbo” was a massive box office hit which saved producer Walt Disney, Walt Disney Productions, and The Walt Disney Company from financial ruin after the box office bombs of “Pinocchio” (1940) and “Fantasia” (1940). It received two Oscar nods with zero wins for Best Musical Scoring and Best Song (Frank Churchill and Oliver Wallace). A live-action remake “Dumbo” was released in 2019.
