Cheers for Miss Bishop (1941)

My Review

“Cheers for Miss Bishop” is a drama film about a retired school teacher reminiscing about her decades in the classroom and the many students she influenced. Director Tay Garnett (“My Favorite Spy” 1942) put together a warm and sentimental and inspiring story for all ages to enjoy. The screenplay was written by Stephen Vincent Benet, adapted from the 1933 novel “Miss Bishop” by Bess Streeter Aldrich.

The cast includes Martha Scott as Ella Bishop, William Gargan, Edmund Gwenn, Sterling Holloway, Dorothy Peterson, Sidney Blackmer, and Rosemary De Camp in her feature film debut as one of Miss Bishop’s students. Although it was slow at the beginning, “Cheers for Miss Bishop” picks up steam as the 95 minute film progresses. It barely broke even at the box office for Richard A. Rowland Productions and United Artists.
