My Review

Charles Boyer plays a man deliberately trying to drive his wife Ingrid Bergman crazy in order to get control of her money and property in “Gaslight.” Director George Cukor (“The Philadelphia Story” 1940) and his team of screenwriters put together a dandy of a thriller in this film with unbelievable suspense and outstanding performances.

Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman head the cast as the Anton’s, Joseph Cotten as the tenacious police detective, Angela Lansbury in her film debut as the maid, May Whitty as the nosy neighbor, and Alec Craig as Turnkey. “Gaslight” was a huge hit at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning two – Best Actress (Bergman) and Best Art Direction. Non-winners include Best Picture, Best Actor (Boyer), Best Supporting Actress (Lansbury), Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography/Black-and-White (Joseph Ruttenberg).
