Gentlemen’s Agreement (1947)

My Review

The Best Picture of 1947 is…..”Gentlemen’s Agreement.” This is a drama film about a reporter’s undercover investigation of antisemitism in New York City and its suburbs. Director Elia Kazan (“The Sea of Grass” 1947) superbly orchestrated a large and stellar cast and an outstanding screenplay by Moss Hart and Elia Kazan.

The cast includes Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire, John Garfield, Celeste Holm, Ann Revere, June Havoc, Albert Dekker, Jane Wyatt, Dean Stockwell, Sam Jaffe, Virginia Gregg, Kathleen Lockhart, Marion Marshall, Gene Nelson, Roy Roberts, and Jesse White as an elevator starter. “Gentlemen’s Agreement” was a box office sensation for producer Darryl F. Zanuck and 20th Century Fox.

The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning three – Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress (Holm). Non-winners include Best Actor (Peck), Best Actress (McGuire), Best Supporting Actress (Revere), Best Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. It was filmed on location in New York and Connecticut and at Fox Studios in Los Angeles.
