My Review

“The Treasure of Sierra Madre” is Western film about two drifters who team up with an aged gold prospector to look for gold reserves deep in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. They strike it big and tensions start building up between them. The heavy drama proceeds from there, well managed by director-screenwriter John Huston (“Key Largo” 1948).

The cast includes Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt as the two drifters, Walter Huston as the old-timer, Bruce Bennett, Barton MacLane, Robert Blake, Jack Holt, and Jay Silverheels. “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” was a box office flop for Warner Bros. Pictures. It was one of the first Hollywood films to be almost entirely filmed on location, this one in Mexico.

The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning three – Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Walter Huston), and Best Screenplay. The non-winner was for Best Picture. In 1985, Angelica Huston won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for “Prizzi’s Honor,” directed by her father John Huston, making three generations of the Huston family to win Academy Awards.
