Romance on the High Seas (1948)

My Review

Doris Day made her big screen debut in a spectacular way in “Romance on the High Seas.” This musical romantic comedy was well handled by director Michael Curtiz (“Casablanca” 1942) who gave the big band singer plenty of musical numbers to perform, including “It’s Magic,” one of her career signature songs. It received one of the picture’s two Oscar nods, one for Best Song and the other for Best Musical Scoring.

Co-stars include Jack Carson, Don DeFore, Janis Paige, Oscar Levant, S. Z. Sakall, Fortunio Bonanova, Eric Blore, Barbara Bates, Grady Sutton, and Sandra Gould, later famous as Gladys Kravitz on television sitcom “Bewitched” (1966-1972). “Romance on the High Seas” was a big hit at the box office for Michael Curtiz Productions and Warner Bros. Pictures.
