Risen (2016)

My Review

“Risen” is a Biblical drama which follows a Roman military investigator who has been appointed by Pontius Pilate to look into reports that Jesus of Nazareth has risen from the dead. The heavy drama proceeds from there. Director Kevin Reynolds (“Waterworld” 1995) has put together this film with excellent production values, good performances, and a consistent plot from the screenplay he wrote with Paul Aiello.

Joseph Fiennes played the lead role of the Roman tribunal Clavius with all seriousness and the appropriate piousness, which seemed to permeate the entire motion picture. Co-stars include Tom Felton as Clavius’ assistant, Peter Firth as Pilate, Maria Botto as Mary Magdalene, Antonio Gil as Joseph of Arimathea, and Cliff Curtis as Jesus of Nazareth. “Risen” made a was profitable at the box office for Columbia Pictures, Affirm Films, LD Entertainment, and Sony Pictures Releasing. Cinematographer Lorenzo Senatore deserves honorable mention for the beautiful photography shot in Malta and Spain.
