“Star Trek Beyond” continues the story of the crew of the star ship Enterprise which has been ambushed and crash-lands on an inhospitable planet, where the crew struggles to survive. Director Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” 2006) put together a high-quality “Star Trek” movie which is thirteenth installment of the franchise and the third (and last) of the reboot series, a sequel to 2009 and 2013’s films. Simon Pegg and Doug Jung did an excellent job with the script.
The cast returning for the third (and final) go-around includes Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, Zachary Pinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard McCoy, Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, Simon Pegg as Montgomery Scott, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu, and Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. Co-stars include Idris Elba, Sophia Boutella, Joe Taslim, Lydia Wilson, and Shea Whigham. “Star Trek Beyond” underperformed at the box office due to the large budget and marketing expenses. Not good new for producer J. J. Abrams, Skydance Media, Bad Robot Productions, and Paramount Pictures.
This film was shot in British Columbia, and was nominated for a single Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Plans for a “Star Trek 4” were officially shelved by Paramount, due to “Beyond’s” mediocre box office, with comments that they are working on another reboot series. Meanwhile, the fourteenth installment of the “Star Trek” franchise was a movie available only on streaming called “Star Trek: Section 31” (2025) starring Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou.
