My Review

“One Way Passage” is a romantic drama film about a condemned murdered and a terminally ill woman who fall in love aboard a cruise ship. Director Tay Garnett and screenwriters Wilson Mizner and Joseph Jackson gave this film a definite Pre-Code feel with a cynical world view where criminals are given a sympathetic depiction, and the main characters “live on the edge” without a guaranteed happy ending.

The cast includes William Powell, Kay Francis, Roscoe Karns, Dewey Robinson, Willie Fung, and Frank McHugh. “One Way Passage” was a box office hit for Warner Bros. Pictures. Robert Lord won an Academy Award for Best Story. A remake came out in 1940 called “Til We Meet Again” starring Merle Oberon, George Brent, and the returning Frank McHugh.
