Spotlight (2015)

My Review

The Best Picture of 2015 is…..”Spotlight.” This biographical film tells the true story of the Boston Globe’s investigation into what turned out to be widespread child abuse by Roman Catholic priests. Director Tom McCarthy (“The Cobbler” 2014) skillfully pealed away layers of drama in a picture which is probably the best journalism film since “All the President’s Men” (1976). He co-wrote the screenplay with Josh Singer.

The actors portraying the investigative team include Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, Brain d’Arcy James. Co-stars include Stanley Tucci, Gene Amoroso, Jamey Sheridan, Billy Crudup, Richard Jenkins, and Len Cariou as Cardinal Bernard Law, Archbishop of Boston. Keaton has the honor of being a star of two Best Picture Oscar winners in a row. He was featured in “Birdman” (2014).

“Spotlight” was a box office success for Participant Media, First Look Media, Anonymous Content, and Open Road Films. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two – Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Non-winners include Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Ruffalo), Best Supporting Actress (McAdams), and Best Film Editing. It was filmed in Boston and Toronto.
