Woodlawn (2015)

My Review

“Woodlawn” is a sports drama about a coach at a 1973 Alabama high school who must unite his students right after desegregation put blacks and whites on the same football team for the first time. A key factor was the conversion to Christianity by many of them, which united them into one unit. Directors Andrew Erwin and Jon Erwin (“I Can Only Imagine” 2018) did an extraordinary job at the helm of this faith based project, which has superior production values, good writing, and memorable performances. Quinton Peeples and Jon Erwin wrote the high-quality screenplay.

The cast includes Sean Astin, Nic Bishop, Caleb Castille, Sherri Shepherd, Jon Voight, Devon Franklin, C. Thomas Howell, and Francesca Battistelli. “Woodlawn” pretty much broke even at the box office for Pure Flix Entertainment, Lighworkers Media, and Crescent City Pictures. It was filmed in Birmingham, Alabama.
