Matt Dillon turns in a gripping performance as a man who feeds his drug habit by robbing drug stores, and his attempts to go straight. Director Gus Van Sant did an excellent job of creating a world of gritty realism in an evenly paced, easy to watch movie; he co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Yost. It was based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by James Fogle.
