My Review

As a result of Walt Disney Pictures’ goal of producing new versions of its entire film library, they came out with a “photorealistic” computer-animated remake of the traditionally animated “The Lion King” of 1994. This 2019 movie of the same name tells the story of the young lion Simba who must step into his deceased father’s role as king. It features fantastic visual effects. an engrossing storyline, and wonderful music. The remake of the original musical score was handled by Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, and Elton John.

Expert production and direction by Jon Favreau (“The Jungle Book” 2016) and good writing by Jeff Nathanson created a smoothly flowing movie with the familiar and interesting storyline. Movie audiences apparently approved, as they awarded The Walt Disney Company over $1.6 billion at the world wide box office. It was the second highest grossing movie of 2019, with Disney movies capturing seven of the top ten grossing films of the year: “Avengers: End Game,” “The Lion King,” “Frozen 2,” “Captain Marvel,” “Star Wars – The Rise of Skywalker,” “Toy Story 4,” and “Aladdin.”

The talented voice cast includes Donald Glover (Simba), Seth Rogan (Pumbaa), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Scar), Alfre Woodward (Sarabi), Billy Eicher (Timon), Joh Kani (Rafiki), John Oliver (Zazu), Beyonce Knowles (Nala), Penny Johnson Jerald (Sarafina), and James Earl Jones returning as Mufasa. The virtual production of “The Lion King” was shot on a blue screen stage in Los Angeles.
