Borat (2006)

My Review

“Borat” is definitely an acquired taste. This mockumentary black comedy tells the story of Kazakhstani journalist Borat Sagdiyev, who comes to America to make a documentary. Along the way, the blunt-talking and foul-mouthed Borat manages to offend just about everyone he comes in contact with. The “brain” behind this show is Sacha Baron Cohen, a talentless British actor/comedian and star of the film, who developed the main character, story, and had a hand in penning the screenplay. Director Larry Charles was merely Cohen’s stand-in at the movie’s helm.

The co-stars are Ken Davitian and Luenell, with cameos by Pamela Anderson, Bob Barr, and Alan Keyes. Anderson was crucial to the “plot,” as Borat fell in love with her while in New York City and traveled across America to meet her. The unwatchable, trashy, and low-brow film “Borat” was nevertheless a big hit at the box office for producer Sacha Baron Cohen, Dune Entertainment, Ingenious Media, Talkback, Channel 4, and 20th Century Fox. It was nominated for one Academy Award for Best Screenplay. “Borat” mercifully has only an 84 minute running time.
