Steel Magnolias (1989)

My Review

“Steel Magnolia” is a comedy-drama movie about the ups and downs of the friendships between six women in a small Southern town. Director Herbert Ross (“Footloose” 1984) skillfully managed the large ensemble cast to form quite an entertaining film. The excellent script was penned by Robert Harling, adapted from his 1987 stage play of the same name.

The principal cast members include Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts. The supporting cast is made up of Tom Skerritt, Dylan McDermott, Sam Shepard, Bibi Besch, Janine Turner, Kevin J. O’Connor, Bill McCutcheon, Knowl Johnson, and Jonathan Ward. The watchable chick flick “Steel Magnolias” was a hit at the box office for Rastar Productions and Tri-Star Pictures. The film’s sole Academy Award nomination went to Julia Roberts for Best Supporting Actress.
